Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Joe Mack began his professional career in 2021. He was taken by the Miami Marlins in Competitive Balance Round A of the 2021 amateur draft, 31st overall. His signing bonus was $2,500,000.
In 2021, he hit .132/.373/.208 with 1 home run, 2 RBI and 20 walks in 19 games for the FCL Marlins; he had just 7 hits, but 9 runs scored. In 2022, he hit .243/.383/.385 with 5 home runs, 15 RBI and 33 walks in 44 games between the FCL Marlins and Jupiter Hammerheads. He played for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League that fall, hitting .230/.347/.459 in 18 games. Going into 2023, he was ranked the #6 prospect in the Marlins system per MLB Pipeline. He spent 2023 with the Beloit Sky Carp, appearing in 120 games and batting .218 with 6 homers and 36 RBIs in what was a disappointing season.
In 2024, he had a bounce-back year. After starting the season with Beloit, he was promoted to the AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos after hitting .347 in 13 games, and finished with a combined slash line of .252/.338/.468 in 125 games. He found his power stroke again, as attested by 30 doubles and 24 homers. He began 2025 at Pensacola, but once again received a quick promotion after batting .318 in 13 games, heading to the AAA Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp on April 22nd. He was then named to play in the 2025 Futures Game. He played 113 games that year, batting .257 with 21 homers and 58 RBIs.
The problem for Joe at that point was that the Marlins had two catchers make their debut at the major league level in 2025 in Liam Hicks and Agustín Ramírez, and both were impressive, so his path to the majors was blocked for the moment. However, both represented their respective countries at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, which gave Mack a chance to get a lot of playing time in spring training, making a strong impression. He had to open the 2026 season back in Jacksonville, where he hit .244 with 3 homers and 9 RBIs in his first 24 games. On May 4th, he was called up to Miami to replace Ramírez, who had been struggling, and started behind the plate against the Philadelphia Phillies that day, going 0 for 3. It took him almost a month to hit his first career homer, as it came on June 2nd off Miles Mikolas of the Washington Nationals. His blast came with one on and one out in the 5th inning, and was immediately followed by homers by Heriberto Hernández and Otto Lopez. His homer was the first hit of the game for the Marlins, and the three consecutive long balls were only the third such instance in team history. Miami won the game, 7-3.
