Biographical Information[edit]

Eiji Shotsu played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.

Shotsu was drafted by the Chunichi Dragons in the 3rd round of the 1997 NPB draft, and he had a 2.45 ERA in 45 appearances in 1998. He pitched 47 games with a 3.35 ERA in 1999, and he was 8th in appearances in the Central League that season, between Tatsuki Yamamoto and Hiromi Makihara. Shotsu completed 2 1/3 shutout innings combined in 3 games in the 1999 Nippon Series, and the Daiei Hawks beat the Dragons in 5 games. He went 5-2 with a 4.47 ERA in 2000, and he recorded a 3.04 ERA in 53 relief outings in 2001. He was 8th in appearances, tied with Shintaro Takeshita and Naoya Shimada. However, he suffered from injuries in 2002, and he only pitched 15 games with a 1.80 ERA.

The Fukui native struggled in 2003 as his ERA was 8.44 in 6 games, and he spent the entire 2004 season in the NPB Farm Leagues. The Dragons then traded him with Akira Miyakoshi to the Seibu Lions for Hiromasa Tamano and Susumu Otomo, and he pitched 36 games with a 5.11 ERA in 2005. Shotsu collected 5 holds with a 5.84 EAR in 23 games in 2006, and he came back in 2007 as he had a 1.59 ERA in 26 games. He went 3-0 with 9 holds and a 2.35 ERA in 32 appearances in 2008, but he allowed 7 runs in 1 2/3 innings in 2009 and he retired. Shotsu later became a scout for the Dragons, signing Kenta Bright, Yota Kyoda, Shotaro Kasahara, Sho Kusaka, Taisei Miya, Tatsuya Shimizu, Kodai Umetsu and Kosuke Ukai.

Overall, Shotsu was 25-10 with 24 holds and a 3.54 ERA, struck out 292 and pitched 386 1/3 innings in 11 seasons in NPB.
