Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Easton Lucas was originally drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 14th round of the 2019 amateur draft out of Pepperdine University. He began his pro career that same year, combining to go 1-2, 3.63 in 13 games between the GCL Marlins and the Batavia Muckdogs, logging 34 2/3 innings. Following the season, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in return for IF Jonathan Villar, but he had to sit out the 2020 season when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues.
When he resumed his career in 2021, it was with the Aberdeen IronBirds of what was called the High-A East that year only. He went 3-1, 3.96 in 27 games, all in relief, and in 2022, he went 3-1, 4.76 in 32 games for the Bowie Baysox of the AA Eastern League. In 2023, he started the year with Bowie, was promoted to the AAA Norfolk Tides after 11 games, then was traded for the second time of his career, heading to the Oakland Athletics in return for P Shintaro Fujinami and moved on to the Las Vegas Aviators of the Pacific Coast League. His overall record in the minors was 1-0, 3.86 in 36 games. He also got to make his major league debut as a member of the A's on September 8th. He made 6 appearances in the Show, totaling 6 2/3 innings, but allowed 6 runs for an ERA of 8.10.
After starting the 2024 season in Las Vegas, where he went 1-0, 2.87 in 11 games, he was called up to Oakland in early May. When he allowed 7 runs in 3 2/3 innings in three outings, the A's tried to send him back to AAA, but instead he changed teams again, as he failed to clear waivers and was picked up by the Detroit Tigers. He made 21 relief appearances with the Toledo Mud Hens, going 1-1, 3.51, and another 3 for Detroit for whom he recorded his first big league win. That came on July 25th when he pitched two hitless and scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians. His whirlwind season continued when he was claimed off waivers again on August 19th, this time by the Toronto Blue Jays. As with his other two organizations that season, he pitched for both the major league team and its AAA affiliate, in this case the Buffalo Bisons. Interestingly, the Blue Jays looked to him as a future starter, and 3 of his 6 appearances for Buffalo were in that role; he went 0-1, 1.37 and in his look-see in Toronto, put up an ERA of 11.57 in 3 games.
He went to spring training with the Blue Jays in 2025 and was scheduled to start the year as part of Buffalo's starting rotation, but his first scheduled game was wiped out by foul weather on March 30th, and that same day he was called up to Toronto to take the place of the injured Max Scherzer on the roster. He made his first appearance of the year as Toronto's starting pitcher against the Washington Nationals on April 2nd, the first major league starting assignment of his career. He did very well, allowing just one hit and no runs in five innings. He received credit for the Jays' 4-2 win. He then did just as well in his second start, this one on the road against the Boston Red Sox on a frigid night at Fenway Park on April 8th: in 5 1/3 innings, he again did not allow a run and struck out 8 batters to be credited with a 6-1 win. His next two starts were disastrous, however, as he gave up 14 runs in 6 2/3 innings, and he was sent back to Buffalo on April 21st.
