Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Drew Gilbert was taken by the Houston Astros in the 1st round of the 2022 amateur draft, with the 28th overall pick, out of the University of Tennessee. In the 2019 amateur draft, the Minnesota Twins had selected him in the 35th round as a "hometown pick", given he was coming out of a high school in Minnesota. At Tennessee, he played three seasons, capping off his career by batting .362 in 2022, with 11 homers and 78 RBIs in 58 games. He was a two-way player in high school and did some pitching in his first two seasons with the Volunteers, but was a full-time outfielder as a junior. He played in the 2021 College World Series.
He began his professional career with 11 games in 2022, split between the FCL Astros Orange and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers of the Carolina League. He hit .313 with 2 homers and 6 RBIs. In 2023, he started off with the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League, hitting .361 in 21 games to earn a quick promotion to the AA Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League. He hit .241 in 60 games there, played in the 2023 Futures Game, then on August 1st was one of two young players sent to the New York Mets in return for ace pitcher Justin Verlander, the other being OF Ryan Clifford. His bat went red hot again after he was assigned to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to finish the year, with a .325 average in 25 games. Overall, his slash line was .289/.381/.487 in 116 games, with 26 doubles and 18 homers, 79 runs scored and 59 RBIs. After the season, he was named a Mets organizational All-Star.
His 2024 season was curtailed by injuries, as he appeared in just 62 games between three teams, the FCL Mets, the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League, and the Syracuse Mets of the International League. He hit just .205/.313/.371 with 10 homers and 33 RBIs. After the season, he played in the Arizona Fall League. In 2025, he started the year with a week of de facto extended spring training with St. Lucie, where he hit .375 in 6 games, before being assigned to Syracuse. He was hitting .243 with 12 homers and 47 RBIs in 82 games when he was traded to the San Francisco Giants on July 30th, alongside Ps José Butto and Blake Tidwell, in return for P Tyler Rogers. He played 5 games for the Sacramento River Cats, going 7 for 14 with 2 doubles and 2 homers, before being called up to San Francisco on August 8th and making his big league debut that day when he started in right field against the Washington Nationals. He went 0 for 4 in a 5-0 win. He quickly became a regular for the Giants, taking over the spot left vacant by veteran Mike Yastrzemski, who had also been traded at the deadline. After taking a few games to get his bearings in the Show, he became an offensive leader on a surging team that got itself back into the postseason race with a great stretch in late August and early September.
