Biographical Information[edit]
Dom Hamel pitched for the Puerto Rico national baseball team before making his big league debut in 2025.
Hamel was drafted by the New York Mets in the 3rd round of the 2021 Amateur Draft. The scout was Gary Brown. The 81st pick of the draft, he signed for a $755,300 bonus. He pitched 3 shutout innings for the FCL Mets in his first year. He went 5-2 with a 3.84 ERA for the St. Lucie Mets in 2022, and he also had a 5-1 record with a 2.59 ERA for the Brooklyn Cyclones. He led Mets farmhands in wins, by two. Hamel then represented Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, paying tribute to his late mother whose family hailed from the island, but he did not appear in any games.
He extended his solid pitching in 2023, posting a 8-6 record with a 3.85 ERA for the AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies. He led the Mets minor leaguers in K (160, 7 ahead of Blade Tidwell) and was third in wins. He tied for 6th in the Eastern League in wins and was second in strikeouts, three shy of Richard Fitts. He opened 2024 with the AAA Syracuse Mets but had a down year, going 5-9, 6.79 in 27 games. Compared to his previous season, he gave up many more hits and walks, and struck out fewer batters, resulting in the much higher ERA. He did somewhat better in 2025, going 4-6, 5.32 in 31 games as a swingman for Syracuse. He improved his K/W ratio to 75/22 in 67 2/3 innings and made his major league debut with the Mets on September 17th, pîtching in relief against the San Diego Padres. He had been on the Mets' 26-man roster in August as well, but without seeing any game action. He was the 44th man to pitch for the Mets that season, not counting a couple of position players who had also taken the mound.
