Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Richard Fitts made his major league debut with the Boston Red Sox in September of 2024.

He was actually drafted by Boston's arch-rivals, the New York Yankees, in the 6th round of the 2021 amateur draft out of Auburn University, but at first declined the Yankees' offer before signing with them as a free agent the following March. He split the 2022 season between the Tampa Tarpons and Hudson Valley Renegades, going a combined 7-8, 3.70 in 22 starts. In 2023, he was in AA with the Somerset Patriots of the Eastern League, where his record was 11-5, 3.48 in 27 games.

The Red Sox acquired him in a trade with the Yankees on December 5, 2023, when they sent OF Alex Verdugo to the Bronx Bombers in return for Fitts, P Greg Weissert and another minor leaguer in Nicholas Judice. Richard then spent the bulk of the 2024 season in AAA with the Worcester Red Sox, going 9-5, 4.17 in 24 games. In his first cup of coffee with Boston, he went 0-1, 1.74 in 4 starts and 20 2/3 innings. He started the 2025 season with Boston, starting against the Texas Rangers on March 30th. He made two more starts and was 0-2, 3.18 when he went on the injured list with a right pectoral strain on April 13th. He then shuttled between AA, AAA and the majors the rest of the season. In Boston, he was 2-4, 5.00 in 11 games, including 10 starts, totaling 45 innings. He struck out 40 batters but was not used in the postseason.

On November 25, 2025, he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals alongside P Brandon Clarke and future considerations in return for veteran major league starter Sonny Gray.
