Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Blade Tidwell was drafted by the New York Mets in the 2nd round of the 2022 amateur draft, out of the University of Tennessee. He had gone 13-5 with a 3.53 ERA in two seasons pitching for the Volunteers. He played for the USA College National Team after his first season in 2021. Before that, he had been a high school teammate of Ryan Weathers at Loretto High School. The Mets moved him quickly through their minor league system after he signed, as he was pitching for the AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies by the end of the 2023 season, when he went a combined 11-6, 3.57 in 25 starts between Class A and AA. In 2024, he split the season between Binghamton and the AAA Syracuse Mets finishing at 3-13, 4.86. He pitched well enough in Binghamton, with an ERA of 2.41 in 7 games, but was just 1-9, 5.93 in 19 games with Syracuse. He did strike out 121 batters in 122 1/3 innings, while giving up just 109 hits.

Blade went to spring training with the Mets in 2025 and quickly caught the attention of reporters by tossing an immaculate inning against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 1st, against a line-up full of major leaguers, with Josh Lowe, Eloy Jimenez and José Caballero being his victims in the 2nd inning. He started the season back at Syracuse and was still spinning his wheels in the early going, with a record of 1-2, 5.00 after six starts when he was called up by the Mets to make his debut in the first game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on May 4th. Things did not go great, as he gave up six runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings and was saddled with a 6-5 loss.
