Biographical Information[edit]

Cy Barger pitched in the American League, the National League, and the Federal League. After posting a 23-13 record in 1909 for the Eastern League's Rochester Bronchos, Cy went 15-15 in 1910 with the Brooklyn Superbas during Zack Wheat's first full major league season, but was reduced to 1-9 a couple of years later during Casey Stengel's rookie season with the club in 1912.

In Barger's first year with the Pittsburgh Rebels in 1914, he posted the Federal's League's second-worst qualified ERA at 4.34. Cy lowered his ERA by more than two runs the next season, completing 8 of his 13 starts (including a two-hit shut out of the Buffalo Blues on May 28th) while also leading the Federal League in games finished with 19 and placing second in saves with 6.

After the demise of the Federal League, Barger pitched five minor league seasons (1916-1920), mostly with the Memphis Chickasaws of the Southern Association where he posted a 41-24 record with 1.117 WHIP over four seasons, including three in which he also managed the team.

Cy remains the only major leaguer to come out of Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. Following his professional career, Cy returned to his alma mater as Director of Athletics.
