Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Carson Benge was selected by the New York Mets with the 19th pick of the first round of the 2024 amateur draft, out of Oklahoma State University. He was coming off an excellent sophomore season in which he had batted .335 with 18 homers and 64 RBIs in 61 games. He was a two-way player in college, also pitching in 18 games for OSU in 2024 and earning 3 saves while going 3-2, 3.16. He had missed the 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
After signing with the Mets, he played 15 games for the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League in 2024, hitting .273. In 2025, he played at three different levels, starting in High-A with the Brooklyn Cyclones, before seeing action in AA with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and AAA with the Syracuse Mets. In 116 games, his slash line was .281/.385/.472 with 15 homers and 73 RBIs. He was named the Eastern League Player of the Month in July, was a South Atlantic League post-season All-Star and a High-A All-Star, and also played in the 2025 Futures Game.
He was ranked as the #19 prospect in baseball by Baseball America heading into the 2026 season, and although he was a non-roster invitee in spring training for the Mets, he had a genuine chance of winning a starting job in their outfield following the departure of Brandon Nimmo in a trade. Indeed, he turned a good performance at the plate in Grapefruit League play into a spot on the Opening Day roster and a starting job in right field on Opening Day, March 26th, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the Mets getting an early afternoon start that day, he became the first player to make his big league debut that season. After striking out in his first two at-bats and then drawing a walk, he homered off Justin Lawrence in the 6th inning for his first big league hit. He added another walk before the game ended as the Mets won, 11-7.
His brother Garrett Benge was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2017 amateur draft and played in their system from 2017 to 2019.
