Events[edit]

The 2026 Major League Baseball season saw the introduction of one very significant rule change: the introduction of the ABS Challenge System, also known as the "robot umpire". The rule had been previously tested in spring training a year earlier and at the 2025 All-Star Game, after having been used for a few seasons already in the minor leagues. It allowed for either the batter, the pitcher or the catcher (but no one else) to challenge the home plate umpire's decision on whether a pitch was a ball or a strike. The pitch would then be shown on the scoreboard crossing the plate where a virtual strike zone was superimposed, and it was deemed a strike if the ball touched any part of said zone, with no further possibility of appealing the play. The whole process was normally completed within 20 to 30 seconds and was a way to reduce tedious arguments about called balls and strikes. In previous testing, the system had the approval of both players and fans, although some players stated that they would not use it. MLB did not have to wait long for the system to be tested, as there was a challenge during the opening game of the season, on March 25th between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. In the 4th inning, a strike call by umpire Bill Miller was challenged by batter José Caballero but was upheld.

There were also tweaks to the All-Star Game festivities, held in Philadelphia, PA to honor the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The 2026 Amateur Draft was brought forward to the Saturday before the game, on July 11th, followed the next day by the 2026 Futures Game, then the Home Run Derby on the Monday and the game itself on Thursday, July 14th. The Wednesday remained opened as a possible rain date. The third edition of the Field of Dreams Game was to take place in Dyersville, IA on August 13th.

The season was preceded by the 2026 World Baseball Classic, the sixth edition of the tournament, featuring 20 national teams playing games in four locations. Some of the sport's biggest names took part in the event. Crowds were excellent as was the television audience, both domestically and internationally, and Venezuela won the title for the first time, defeating Team USA in the final game. As a result of the WBC, the major league season did not feature an opening series in Asia as had been the case the previous two years. Instead, the aforementioned March 25 game between the Yankees and Giants was the major league opener as the only game played that day, with all other teams starting their season the following day or on March 27th.

There were still international games on the schedule, however, with a two-game series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres being played in Mexico City on April 25-26. The season also marked the return of the Tampa Bay Rays to their traditional home of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL, as repairs to the facility were completed one year after its roof was torn off by a hurricane in October of 2024, forcing the Rays to relocate to a spring training ballpark in Tampa, FL for the 2025 season. The Athletics were still using a temporary ballpark, however, playing their second season at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, CA, while their new permanent home in Las Vegas, NV was under construction.

One of the issues that was increasingly discussed as the season advanced was the renewal of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, set to expire after the season. Amid recriminations about the loss of competitive balance and how certain teams were completely ignoring the luxury tax because their revenue was so much higher than that of competing teams, there was no lack of prophets of doom predicting a protracted strike taking place in a year's time. The two sides, the owners and the MLBPA, at least began exchanging positions early, in May to be precise, in marked contrast to the previous round of talks in 2022, which had never gotten off the ground before the owners unilaterally declared a lock-out in December. The Commissioner's initial proposal of a salary cap and a salary floor was met with skepticism from the players' side, however, as they feared that it would simply reduce salaries, with the net result of making the rich even richer.
