Biographical Information[edit]

Bill Miller has been a major league umpire since 1997, when he worked his first game in the American League. He began his umpiring career in the 1990 Northwest League and moved up to the South Atlantic League (1991), California League (1991-1992), Texas League (1993-1994), International League (1995) and Pacific Coast League (1995-1999). He became a full-time member of the major league umpiring staff in 2000, but had worked American League games in each of the previous three season.

He worked the 2007 All-Star Game, 2009 World Baseball Classic, 2010 World Series, 2017 World Baseball Classic and 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Miller was promoted to crew chief before the 2014 season. He had the honor of being the home plate umpire for the opening game of the 2026 Major League Baseball season, between the visiting New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park on March 25th. As such, he became the first umpire to have one of his calls challenged under the ABS Challenge System introduced by MLB that season. Yankees batter José Caballero challenged a strike call on a pitch by Logan Webb in the 4th inning, but the system upheld Miller's call.
