Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher A.J. Ellis played eleven years in the majors, mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his best year, 2012, he had 505 plate appearances, hit 13 home runs, and put up a line of .270/.373/.414. The team that year slugged .374. During his career he developed a reputation as a very savvy ballplayer, one who might eventually become a manager after his playing days were over.

At Austin Peay State University, he was all-conference four years running. He majored in mass communications in college. He was drafted in the 18th round in June 2003 by the Dodgers.

Starting in the minors in 2003, he generally posted modest averages with not much power until 2008 when he put up a line of .321/.436/.456 with the Las Vegas 51s.

He made his major league debut in 2008, appearing in four games with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Two other players out of Austin Peay were in the majors in 2008, Jamie Walker and George Sherrill. Ellis eventually became the major leaguer out of Austin Peay with the most at-bats, although Jimmy Stewart appeared in more major league games.

He posted a reasonably good year for the 2018 Padres, hitting .272 with an OBP of .378. He retired after the 2018 season and joined the San Diego Padres' front office as a special adviser in the baseball operations department.
