Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Welinton Herrera was signed by the Colorado Rockies on January 20, 2021 as an international amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic. He then spent his first two seasons as a pro in the Dominican Summer League, first with the DSL Colorado in 2021 and then with the DSL Rockies in 2022. He was used almost exclusively as a reliever those two years, going 5-1, 2.93 with 2 saves the second.
In 2023, he moved to the United States, playing for the ACL Rockies and going 2-0, 3.27 in 21 games. He put up his first eye-popping numbers in 2024, when he finished at 11-4, 3.47 in 46 games, all in relief, between the Fresno Grizzlies and the Spokane Indians. In 62 1/3 innings, he struck out 92 batters. He was named a post-season All-Star in the California League. After the season, he pitched 10 games for the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican League, putting up an ERA of 1.80 against much older and much more experienced competition. In 2025, he started off dominating Northwest League batters at Spokane, with an ERA of 0.49 and 10 saves in 15 outings. On May 20th, he was promoted to the Hartford Yard Goats of the Eastern League, then two months later not only pitched for the National League in the 2025 Futures Game, but saved his side's 4-2 win. In all, he pitched 52 games and finished at 5-5, 2.64 with 17 saves. In 64 2/3 innings, he struck out 99 batters.
He started the 2026 season in the AAA Pacific Coast League with the Albuquerque Isotopes, where he went 3-1, 5.16 in his first 16 games. He was called up to the majors on May 25th and made his debut the same day, pitching the final inning of a 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He retired all three batters he faced.
