Biographical Information[edit]

Trent Harris was mainly an infielder in college, first at High Point University and then at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, never pitching more than 4 games in any year until his fifth and final season at UNC-Pembroke in 2023. He benefitted from an extra year of eligibility due to his sophomore season at High Point being interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He had had a pretty good year with the bat in 2022, with a .294 average and 28 RBIs in 45 games, and hit even better in his final season (.305 with 30 RBIs in 44 games), but it was his pitching that got him drafted, as he went 7-3, 3.32 in 17 games, with 2 saves and 69 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings. He then confirmed this performance with the Wilson Tobs of the Coastal Plain League, with an ERA of 0.30 in 6 games. He had been passed over in the 2023 amateur draft, but the San Francisco Giants signed him as an undrafted free agent on July 17, 2023.

Given his spotty playing history up to that point, he was a long shot to be more than an organizational roster filler but did have one thing working for him: good baseball bloodlines. His father, Greg Harris, although not the more famous ambidextrous pitcher Greg Harris, had pitched in the majors, and his brother, also named Greg Harris had pitched several seasons in the minors. Another brother, Drake Harris, had played college baseball at the University of South Carolina Upstate. In Trent's case, he started off his career with the ACL Giants Black, but after going 3-0, 0.75 with 3 saves in 9 game, he was promoted to the San Jose Giants of the California League, where he went 1-0 with a spotless ERA in 6 games. In 2024, he continued to dominate opponents, starting at San Jose and then moving up to the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League and finally to the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Eastern League. His combined record in 36 games, all in relief, was 9-3, 1.81 with 5 saves. In 79 2/3 innings, he gave up just 48 hits and 25 walks, while striking out 105 batters. After the season, he was named the Giants' Prospect of the Year by mlb.com.

In 2025, he continued his rapid rise, as after putting up an ERA of 1.69 in 13 games with Richmond he was promoted to the AAA Sacramento River Cats on June 3rd, less than two years after signing with the Giants. While he did not do as well in the Pacific Coast League, he was still selected to play in the 2025 Futures Game, a rare honor for an undrafted player (not counting international signees), and went 4-2, 4.40 in 43 games between the two levels. He continued to maintain a high strikeout rate, with 65 Ks in 57 1/3 innings.
