- 1909 - Bombin Pedroso throws a no-hitter for 11 innings against the 1909 AL champion Detroit Tigers in their visit to Cuba.
- 1966 - Sandy Koufax announces his retirement three weeks after winning his record third Cy Young Award.
- 1997 - The 1997 expansion draft is held. Tony Saunders and Brian Anderson (pictured) are the first two selections, by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks, respectively. Dmitri Young, Joe Randa and Tony Batista are among those selected.
- 1997 - Hiroki Kokubo and Shinya Miyamoto are among ten NPB players served with arrest warrants for tax evasion.
- 2001 - The Cuban national team beats Team USA, 5-3, in the Gold Medal game of the 2001 Baseball World Cup as Tom Shearn allows three runs in the 8th in the last international competition for Omar Linares and Orestes Kindelan, long-time Cuban stars.
- 2007 - Team USA wins the 2007 Baseball World Cup, ending the run of nine straight titles by the Cuban national team. Jayson Nix wins tourney MVP honors and drives in two runs in the Gold Medal game.
