Biographical Information[edit]
Efrain Valdez is the brother of Carlos Valdez. He played for the Dominican national team in the 2003 Pan American Games.
He pitched only 26 games in the majors during his career, but they were spread out over almost a full decade. He first came up with the Cleveland Indians in 1990 and 1991 and made 20 appearances over those two seasons. In spite of pitching pretty well - his ERA was 2.73 over 29 2/3 innings - he did not return to the Show for a number of years. One of the issues may have been that he walked 17 batters while striking out 14. After bouncing around for a while, he resurfaced with the Arizona Diamondbacks during their inaugural season in 1998, pitching 6 times with no decisions and an ERA of 4.15.
He was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the San Diego Padres in 1983, and from there was purchased by the Texas Rangers the next year. The Indians picked him up in the minor league portion of the 1988 Rule V Draft, then he was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays during the 1991 season. He later signed as a free agent with the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets, and the D-Backs purchased him from the Mets two months into the 1998 season. His minor league career lasted from 1983 to 2003, with a number of interruptions. This included a stint in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in the mid-1990s, and a number of seasons in the Mexican League after his last major league appearance. He returned briefly to the CPBL in 1999, then spent a full season in the Korea Baseball Organization with the LG Twins in 2001, going 10-9, 4.65 as a starter.
