- 1949 - Player-manager Lou Boudreau (pictured) gets a two-year contract renewal. He led the Cleveland Indians to the 1948 World Series.
- 1950 - The Kokutetsu Swallows are formed. They will be ineffective for years despite the presence of star Masaichi Kaneda, but will enjoy success in the 1990s as the Yakult Swallows.
- 1966 - Three-time All-Star Tony Kubek retires due to back problems.
- 1978 - Gaylord Perry is traded to the San Diego Padres. He will win the Cy Young Award in his first season with the team.
- 2005 - High-priced free agent Carlos Delgado signs with the Florida Marlins but will only spend one year with the club.
