Biographical Information[edit]

Tanner Andrews was already 30 years old and a veteran of 11 minor league season when he made his major league debut for the Toronto Blue Jays on May 25, 2026. He had been called up that day from the AAA Buffalo Bisons when starting pitcher Dylan Cease was placed on the injured list. The call-up was only intended to give an overworked Jays bullpen some help for a couple of days until a starting pitcher was selected to take Cease's next turn in the rotation, but with Toronto having fallen to an 8-2 deficit against the Miami Marlins after 8 innings, it was a perfect opportunity for Andrews to get his feet wet at the major league level. His first three pitches were balls, but he settled down after that, getting Xavier Edwards to fly out to center field, and then retiring the next two men he faced as well for a perfect first inning of work. He then pitched two scoreless innings the next day, completing an 8-1 win over the Marlins, then was sent back to Buffalo so that Toronto could have another fresh arm available for the next few days, in this case Austin Voth.

Andrews was originally drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 10th round of the 2018 amateur draft out of Purdue University. The Blue Jays were his fourth organization, as he had previously pitched for the San Francisco Giants and Minnesota Twins before signing with the Blue Jays before the 2026 season. He had also tasted the independent leagues, with half a season with the Staten Island FerryHawks of the Atlantic League in 2025 before signing with the Twins. Before that, he had spent two full seasons in AAA with the Sacramento River Cats in 2023 and 2024, but had posted high ERAs both seasons (5.74 and 6.95). He was 2-0, 1.35 with 5 saves in 16 games at Buffalo before getting his first look at the Show.
