Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Shane Drohan was selected in the 5th round of the truncated 2020 amateur draft by the Boston Red Sox out of Florida State University. Three years earlier, he had been a 23rd-round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies coming out of high school. In three seasons with the Seminoles, he had gone a combined 3-2 in 26 games, his freshman year in 2018 being limited to just 4 1/3 innings, and his junior year being stopped by the COVID-19 pandemic after just 4 starts. In 2019 though, he had gone 3-1, 3.66 in 16 games, with 71 strikeouts in in 51 2/3 innings, showing some good potential, and Florida State reached the College World Series.
Shane's first pro season was with the Salem Red Sox of Low-A East (the once and future Florida State League) in 2021, where he went 7-4, 3.96 in 23 starts. He was named a Red Sox organizational All-Star. In 2022, he started off with the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League before being promoted to the Portland Sea Dogs of the AA Eastern League at the end of the year. His combined record was 7-8, 3.89 in 27 games, and he was again named an organizational All-Star. In 2023, he went 5-0, 1.32 in his first six starts with Portland to be named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Month and earn a quick promotion to the AAA Worcester Red Sox, where he was 4-7, 6.57. He was named to play for the American League team in the 2023 Futures Game, and his final record was 10-7, 5.05. Given his struggles in AAA, the Red Sox decided not to add him to the 40-man roster after the season, making him available for the 2023 Rule V Draft. The Chicago White Sox jumped on the opportunity to take him for a nominal fee to assess whether he was in fact a top prospect, as he had appeared at times, or not.
He spent the first three months of the 2024 season in the White Sox system as he was officially on the injured list. He pitched a total of 10 times at three different levels but the White Sox figured he was not ready to help them at the major league level and returned him to Boston on June 12th. He continued to fight with his health after returning to the Red Sox and only made 2 starts for the Worcester Red Sox before being shut down for the season. In all, his ERA over 16 1/3 innings spread among four different teams was 7.71. In 2025, he started the year in Worcester, but once again struggled with injuries which led to a stint on the IL, a rehabilitation assignment in Greenville, and finally a return to Worcester. He pitched well in AAA, however, going 5-1, 2.27 in 12 games, with 67 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings. That once again made him a compelling prospect and on February 9, 2026, the Milwaukee Brewers decided to take a flyer on him, acquiring him in a six-player trade with Boston. He was accompanied by fellow P Kyle Harrison and infielder David Hamilton, while Boston received IFs Caleb Durbin, Andruw Monasterio and Anthony Seigler, as well as a Competitive Balance Round B pick in the 2026 amateur draft.
He started the 2026 season in the minors with the AAA Nashville Sounds but was called up to Milwaukee on April 6th after making just one start. He made his debut against his former team, starting against the Red Sox at Fenway Park on April 8th. After a couple of scoreless innings, he gave up 3 runs in the 3rd and left after just 2 2/3 innings, having given up 3 hits and 4 walks. He was charged with Milwaukee's 5-0 loss.
His father, Bill Drohan played four seasons in the minor leagues from 1987-1990.
