Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Scott Erwin played in the Oakland Athletics system from 1989 to 1994, peaking at Double-A.
He was drafted twice. Initially, he was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 8th round of the 1988 amateur draft, a couple picks after pitcher Mark Wohlers and ahead of future 200-game winner Tim Wakefield, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the Oakland Athletics in the 5th round of the 1989 amateur draft, one pick ahead of pitcher Steve Chitren. He went 6-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 15 starts for the Southern Oregon A's in 1989, averaging a K per inning, then went 6-11 with a 4.32 mark in 25 starts for the Modesto A's in 1990. In 1991, he went 2-4 with a 3.28 ERA in 30 relief appearances, striking out 52 in 35 2/3 innings for Modesto and the Huntsville Stars. Baseball America ranked him the #88 prospect going into 1992, between Rico Brogna and Keith Mitchell. The publication named him the #3 prospect in the A's chain, behind Todd Van Poppel and Mike Neill, and just ahead of David Zancanaro. With Huntsville in 1992, he went 3-5 with a 3.28 ERA in 23 relief appearances, striking out 39 in 35 2/3 innings. After not pitching in 1993, he went 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA in 7 games (5 starts) for the AZL Athletics in 1994 to wrap up his career. In 14 innings, he had 21 Ks.
Overall, Erwin went 18-24 with a 3.84 ERA in 100 games (45 starts). In 299 2/3 innings, he allowed 250 hits and 175 walks (1.418 WHIP), while striking out 323 batters.
Prior to playing professionally, he was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 1988 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
