Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 31st pick of the 2024 amateur draft, out of the University of Kentucky. The pick was a Prospect Promotion Incentive Pick awarded to the D-Backs after OF Corbin Carroll had won the 2023 National League Rookie of the Year Award and was their second of the draft after choosing Slade Caldwell two picks earlier with their regular choice. Waldschmidt was coming off a year in which he had hit .333 in 59 games for the Kentucky Wildcats after transferring from Charleston Southern University in 2023, with 14 homers and 46 RBIs, and in which he had played in the 2024 College World Series.

He began his pro career in 2024 with the Visalia Rawhide of the California League, hitting .273 in 14 games. In 2025, he split his season almost exactly 50/50 between the Hillsboro Hops of the Northwest League and the Amarillo Sod Poodles of the Texas League, posting an overall slash line of .289/.419/.473 in 134 games, with 27 doubles, 18 homers and 78 RBIs. He was named the Texas League Player of the Month in August, was a Northwest League post-season All-Star, and a Baseball America AA All-Star. He was ranked the #48 prospect in baseball by Baseball America heading into the 2026 season, which he started in AAA with the Reno Aces of the Pacific Coast League. He was hitting .289 with 3 homers and 22 RBIs after 34 games when he was called up to Arizona on May 8th. He made his major league debut that same day as a pinch-hitter for DH Adrian Del Castillo in the 8th inning of a game against the New York Mets, singling off Brooks Raley. He stayed in the game at DH but did not get to bat again as New York prevailed, 3-1, in 10 innings.
