This flash of brilliance did not foreshadow his major league career, as he only made three more starts the rest of his career. He was a member of the bullpen of the World Champion 1986 New York Mets but did not appear in the postseason.
Niemann was a coach for the Pittsfield Mets in 1990, St. Lucie Mets in 1991, Binghamton Mets in 1992-1994. He was on the big league Mets staff from 1997 to 1999. Niemann was a coach for the Norfolk Tides in 2003 and 2006 and St. Lucie again in 2005. He was the bullpen coach of the New York Mets in 2009 and 2010, then in 2011 was named the organization's pitching rehab coordinator, working closely with ace Johan Santana. He left the Mets after that season to join the Boston Red Sox organization in 2012. He started the season as the assistant pitching coach before replacing Bob McClure as the full-time pitching coach on August 20th. Niemann was the pitching coach for the Springfield (MO) Cardinals in 2013-2014 and Palm Beach Cardinals in 2015-2017.
