Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Patrick Monteverde played for three different schools during his collegiate career, staying a total of five seasons, as he was one of the players who took advantage of being given an extra year of eligibility after the 2020 season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. His senior year was with Texas Tech University, where he went 7-4, 3.75 in 16 starts in 2021. That led to his being drafted in the 8th round of the 2021 amateur draft by the Miami Marlins.
He began his professional career in 2021 with the FCL Marlins pitching 14 2/3 innings spread over 7 games with an ERA of 3.07 and 2 saves. In 2022, he was back to his familiar role from college as a starting pitcher, splitting the year between the Beloit Sky Carp of the Midwest League and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League. In 21 starts, he went 4-4, 3.20 while logging 109 2/3 innings and striking out 122 batters. In 2023, he was excellent for Pensacola, going 10-5, 3.32 in 21 starts and earning a spot on the National League squad for the 2023 Futures Game. He was one of the oldest players in the contest, a function of the long time he had spent in college, but in terms of professional experience, he was right on average with fellow participants. He made a couple of starts in AAA with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in July and August, although these did not go well as he gave up 15 runs in 8 2/3 innings, although he did pick up a win. He was sent back to Jacksonville to complete the season, where he continued to pitch well. Overall, he struck out 121 batters in 122 2/3 innings. He was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Month in May and a post-season All-Star as well, and was also a Marlins organizational All-Star.
In 2024, he went 7-7, 5.50 while pitching at three levels, not counting the Arizona Fall League. He made 22 starts in 23 appearances, mainly between AA and AAA, although he also made a couple of starts in the Florida State League on a rehabilitation assignment. In all, he pitched 113 innings and struck out 102 batters. He started the 2025 season pitching in relief for Jacksonville, then was called up to Miami on April 19th. He made his debut that same day, taking over for Cal Quantrill in the 4th inning of a game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Quantrill had allowed 7 runs in 3 1/3 innings, and Patrick allowed another 4 in 3 2/3 innings as the Marlins lost the game, 11-10 after the Fish had managed to score six runs in the top of the 9th to come excruciatingly close to what would have been an incredible comeback.
