Biographical Information[edit]
Pat Clougherty was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 11th round of the 1989 amateur draft out of high school, the same round Trevor Hoffman was picked. He hit .368/?/.707 at NC State in 1993, with 21 homers and 80 RBI in 239 at-bats. [1] He was 6th in NCAA Division I in dingers (behind Ryan McGuire, George Arias, Darren Dreifort, Jason Varitek and Todd Walker) and 9th in RBI. [2] He was named second-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association, alongside future big leaguers Bill Mueller, Dante Powell and Arias. [3] For Team USA in the 1993 Intercontinental Cup, he batted .297/.325/.405 with 12 RBI in 11 games, playing mostly DH (fielding .917 in two games at 1B, backing up Todd Helton and Andy Barkett). He did not homer in the event yet was second on the US in RBI (9 behind Walker, 7 ahead of #3 Helton, Russ Johnson and Todd Dunn). In the Gold Medal Game, he was 0 for 4 with a RBI against Cuba's Lazaro Valle and Omar Ajete in a 9-4 loss. [4] Returning to NC State in 1994, he batted .317/?/.679 with 21 circuit clouts in 218 at-bats. [5] He tied for 8th in Division I in homers. [6] His lone pro action came with the 1995 Florence Flame, hitting .318/.387/.500 with 15 runs and 14 RBI in 17 games; he was among the Atlantic Coast League's top hitters when the league suspended play. [7] He later worked in health care. [8]
