Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Parker Messick was selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the 2nd round of the 2022 amateur draft, out of Florida State University. He pitched for the American League in the 2025 Futures Game, then made his debut with the Guardians one month later, starting against the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 20th. He lasted 6 2/3 innings, giving just 1 run, but ended up with a no-decision as Arizona tied the game in the bottom of the 9th, and then won in the 10th. He made a total of seven starts for Cleveland that year, going 3-1, 2.72 with 38 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings.
He started the 2026 season with the Guardians and got off to a great start, picking up the win in three of his first four starts, and a no-decision in the other. The fourth of these came on April 16th against the Baltimore Orioles and he went into the 9th inning bidding to become the first Cleveland pitcher to pitch a no-hitter since Len Barker's perfect game way back in 1981. He had given up just two walks through eight innings; Leody Taveras ended the attempt by singling just past second baseman Juan Brito. He then gave up another single to Blaze Alexander before giving way to Cade Smith who allowed both inherited runners to score while recording the final three outs. Parker received credit for the 4-2 win and Smith for the save. Only three other pitchers for Cleveland had taken a no-hit bid into the 9th inning since Barker's gem - John Farrell in 1989, Carlos Carrasco in 2015, and Gavin Williams the previous season - but all three had come up short as well.
