Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Mike Goff was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 21st round of the 1984 amateur draft and made his pro debut that summer with the Elmira Pioneers. With the club, he hit .296 with 12 home runs and was named the team's MVP. He played in the minors until 1988, when his career was ended by a back injury.
From 1989 to 1991, Goff was an assistant coach at the University of South Alabama. In 1992, he was a hitting coach for the Jacksonville Suns. He went on to manage the Bellingham Mariners in 1993 and 1994 and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in 1995 and 1996. From 1997 to 2005, he was the Seattle Mariners' Coordinator of Instruction for the minor league system. On August 13, 2005, Goff joined the Mariners major league staff as the team's first base coach. He remained in that position until September 13, 2006 when he took over bench coaching responsibilities on an interim basis. Goff returned to first base in 2007 before once again moving to bench coach, this time on July 2nd. He replaced bench coach John McLaren who had been promoted to manager.
Goff left the Mariners organization in 2008 for a position as manager of the Chattanooga Lookouts in the Cincinnati Reds chain. He then moved to the San Francisco Giants as a minor league manager in 2009-2011 and 2013-2014. There is no record of his activity in 2012.
The Miami Marlins hired Goff in 2015 as a major league advance scout. On May 18, 2015, he returned to the major league ranks as the Marlins bench coach under newly-appointed manager Dan Jennings. It was a particularly important position given Jennings had no prior professional managerial or coaching experience, and Goff was promoted at Jennings' insistence.
From 2016-2021 Goff worked as a high school coach, including a stint at Daphne High School beginning in 2018. He was named assistant coach at Arizona State University for 2022 under newly hired head coach Willie Bloomquist. Goff moved to a non-coaching role in 2025 as a Special Assistant to Baseball Operations. In 2026, Goff was listed on the Sun Devils roster as a bench and infield coach.
