Biographical Information[edit]

Shortstop Leo De Vries was considered one of the top prospects in baseball - ranked as high as #3 - when he was sent by the San Diego Padres to The Athletics as part of the trade for Mason Miller on July 31, 2025. Joining him in the deal were Ps Henry Baez, Eduarniel Núñez and Braden Nett, while JP Sears also headed to San Diego. Of the players acquired by the Athletics, only Núñez had made his big league debut, and the three others were considered longer-term acquisitions, in line with the A's plan to look to a mid-term horizon, when they would move into their brand new digs in Las Vegas, NV, and not to focus on their immediate performance.

In any case. De Vries was widely considered the top prize in the deal. He had been signed by the Padres on January 15, 2024, as an international amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic and had quickly begun to open eyes. In 2024, he played 75 games in the California League with the Lake Elsinore Storm at age 17, making him a good 4.2 years younger than the average player in the league. He hit .237/.361/.441 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs against that much older competition. He missed a month of action with an injury in August and September, then played in the Arizona Fall League, where he played in the Rising Stars Game.

In 2025, he started the year with the Fort Wayne Wizards of the Midwest League, where he hit .245 in 82 games and made the National League's roster for the 2025 Futures Game. Following the trade, he played 15 games for the Lansing Lugnuts, staying in the same circuit, before being promoted to the Midland RockHounds of the Texas League on August 18th. In all, between the three stops, he played 118 games, batting .255/.355/.451 with 15 homers, 72 runs and 74 RBIs. He was still among the youngest players in both leagues in which he played. With Fort Waynem, he was twice named the Midwest League Player of the Week, and was the Player of the Month for April, when he had one particularly outstanding game, on April 22nd when he not only hit for the cycle but also had a pair of homers and drove in 8 runs in a 15-14 win over his future Lansing teammates. He was one of the biggest stories for the Athletics as a non-roster invitee in spring training in 2026 even though it was almost certain that he would begin the year back in AA with Midland.
