Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Justin Hagenman was 28 years old and was with his third major league organization when he made his major league debut with the New York Mets shortly after the start of the 2025 season.
He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 23rd round of the 2018 amateur draft out of Pennsylvania State University, his late draft status an early indication that he would have to work hard to make it to the Show. He pitched in the Dodgers' system from 2018 to 2023, including sitting out the 2020 season when the minor league were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. He had been exclusively a starting pitcher at Penn State, but the Dodgers used him almost solely as a reliever, apart from the occasional spot start, and he made it to AA in 2021 and AAA in 2022, when he 4-2, 6.08 with the Oklahoma City Dodgers after starting the year in the AA Texas League with the Tulsa Drillers.
In 2023, he started the season with Oklahoma City and 4-0, 2.78 after 25 games when on July 25th he was traded to the Boston Red Sox along with fellow pitcher Nick Robertson in return for major league utility player Kiké Hernandez. He finished the season with the Worcester Red Sox in the International League, where he went 2-0, 3.26 in 16 games. In 2024, he spent the whole season at Worcester, finishing at 4-6, 4.91 in 28 games as a swingman (he made 15 starts), logging 92 2/3 innings and striking out 98 opponents. Having failed to receive an opportunity in spite of good results for Boston's top minor league affiliate, he moved as a free agent to the Mets following the 2024 season.
He started 2025 back in AAA with the Syracuse Mets, where 2 of his first 3 appearances were as a starter. He had given up 11 runs in 10 1/3 innings when he got the call to the Big Apple on April 16th, when the Mets had to scramble to find a replacement for that day's scheduled starter, Griffin Canning, who was fighting an illness. He made his debut that same day, as the bulk man following a one-inning stint by opener Huascar Brazoban against the Minnesota Twins. He took the game into the 5th inning, allowing just 3 hits and 1 runs in 3 1/3 innings while striking out 4, before turning the ball over to José Butto, his job well done. His catcher that day was Hayden Senger, another player who had toiled for a number of years in the anonymity of the minor leagues before getting a chance to make his debut at age 27 a couple of weeks earlier as a result of an injury.
