Pitcher Josh Ekness was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 12th round of the 2023 amateur draft out of the University of Houston where he had gone 2-4, 6.45 in 21 games. Before that, he had been at Lamar University for two years, and his numbers there were not particularly good either.
He did much better once he turned pro, with an ERA of 2.08 in 6 games for the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League after he signed with Miami in 2023. In 2024, he put up an ERA of 1.91 in 48 games spread among three team, including Jupiter, the Beloit Sky Carp of the Midwest League and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League. He spent the bulk of 2025 with Pensacola, but also made it to AAA and the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp for three games. In Pensacola, he was 4-1. 2.73 with 10 saves in 43 games.
He started the 2026 season with Jacksonville where he was 1-1, 5.68 after 9 games, with 21 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings, when he got the call to Miami on May 2nd. He made his major league debut the next day retiring all three batters he faced in a 7-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
