Biographical Information[edit]

Renton-born Joel Condreay went to Kentridge High School in nearby Kent, WA, then moved to the other side of Washington state for college, attending Whitworth University in Spokane. He was a four-time all-conference selection as a shortstop for Whitworth but was ultimately drafted and converted into a pitcher by the Colorado Rockies in the 31st round of the 2018 amateur draft out of the private Christian university. He didn't pitch until his final year of college, and then only 2 2/3 innings. He stayed in the Inland Northwest for his first professional season, pitching 14 games for the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League in 2018. In his first foray into pitching, he threw 14 innings, he allowed 17 hits, walked 11 and threw 2 wild pitches. He struck out 8 and had an ERA of 4.50. He spent 2019 back in Boise, this time throwing 39 1/3 innings while leading the Northwest League with 27 appearances. He had a 5-1 record out of the bullpen and lowered his ERA to 3.43 and WHIP to 1.093. He significantly cut down his walks from 7.1 to 1.8 BB/9 and also decreased his hit rate from 10.9 to 8.0 H/9. He struck out many more batters as well with 8.9 K/9; his K/BB ratio went from 0.73 to 4.88.

In the offseason following 2019, he underwent Tommy John surgery. After the cancelled 2020 season, he continued rehabbing his UCL at the rookie league level with the ACL Rockies. He got into 10 games, all in relief. His ERA was 4.82, and he walked 7 men in 9 1/3 innings. However, he struck out 12 and didn't allow any home runs.

Following his return to action, his arsenal primarily consisted of a mid 90’s fastball and low 80’s sweeping slider. He moved up to the class A Fresno Grizzlies in 2022 and rewarded the Rockies organization with a very good start to the season. In 20 games, 16 of which he finished, he went 3-0 with 7 saves posting a 1.25 ERA and 1.108 WHIP - only 3 earned runs in 21 1/3 innings. He struck out 24, allowed only 17 hits, and walked 7 men. On June 7th and 8th, he collected back-to-back saves to tie the California League lead in saves. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome requiring surgery thus concluding his season.

Condreay moved up another level in 2023 to A+. This meant he'd once again be pitching in the city in which he went to college, as the Rockies' team at that level were the Spokane Indians. On opening day on April 11, he received a loud ovation from the Avista Stadium crowd during the pre-game player introductions. He got into that game, too, in relief of Gabriel Hughes, who also attended college in Spokane (Hughes went to Gonzaga). Condreay pitched a scoreless 6th inning. The Indians beat the Eugene Emeralds, 7-4. In his first nine games, all in relief, he had an ERA of 2.25 and limited opposing hitters to a .207 batting average. However, in the aftermath of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, his velocity and consistency decreased significantly. As he reached mid-May his performance suffered; on May 12th, 4 runs scored against him on a sacrifice fly and a two-out three-run home run by Ivan Melendez. He was released by the Rockies organization on May 25th.

In 2024, he signed with the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League, posting a 5.04 ERA with 9.5 K/9, 5.0 BB/9, and 0.3 HR/9 amid intermittent stints on the injured list. Condreay retired following the 2024 season. He served as pitching coordinator for Driveline Baseball, a data-driven player development facility.
