Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jim Manias pitched professionally from 1996 to 2002, peaking at Double-A.

He was taken by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 25th round of the 1996 amateur draft. By his second season, 1997, he was 13-5 with a 3.78 ERA in 28 starts for the St. Petersburg Devil Rays; he tied Mickey Callaway for the Florida State League lead in starts and he tied multiple pitchers for the lead in shutouts with 2. He also tied Mike Lincoln and Brian Powell for second in the league in wins, behind Corey Lee's 15. In 1998, he led the FSL in home runs allowed (27), was second in earned runs allowed (85, behind Josh Garrett's 90) and he tied Brett Herbison and Tony McKnight for second in losses (13, behind Marcos Castillo's 15). In 1999, after joining the Cincinnati Reds organization, he had 103 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings between the Rockford Reds and Chattanooga Lookouts. In 2000, he had 7 complete games between the Dayton Dragons and Chattanooga (with 6 in the Midwest League, tying Dusty Bergman for the league lead), and in 2001, he was 4-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 48 relief appearances between the Mudville Nine and Chattanooga.

Overall, Manias went 44-43 with a 4.18 ERA in 186 games (94 starts). In 710 1/3 innings, he allowed 721 hits and 203 walks (1.301 WHIP), while striking out 580 batters.
