Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Jhostynxon García made his major league debut for the Boston Red Sox on August 22, 2025, starting in right field in the second game of a crucial four-game series against the New York Yankees at New Yankee Stadium. He had been called up the day before due to an injury to regular RF Wilyer Abreu, one month after appearing for the American League in the 2025 Futures Game. He went 0 for 3 in his debut an drew a walk, in a 1-0 win by Boston, the first 1-0 game between the two bitter rivals in over three decades. He had started the season in AA, batting .256 in 33 games for the Portland Sea Dogs, before a promotion to the Worcester Red Sox on May 20th. He was hitting .303 in 66 games in AAA at the time of his call-up, and had hit 20 homers between the two levels. In all, he went 1 for 7 in 5 games for Boston.
Jhostynxon, whose unusual first name drew a lot of attention even before he made his debut, was signed by Boston as an international amateur free agent on July 2, 2019. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he had to wait until 2021 to make his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League. He had a rough first season in the U.S. when he hit just .188 in 31 games for the FCL Red Sox in 2022, but improved to .230 in 73 games for the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League the next year. He really emerged as a prospect in 2024 when he combined to hit .286/.356/.536 at three levels (A, High-A and AA), with 23 homers and 66 RBIs. Following the season, he was named an All-Star in the South Atlantic League, where he played for the Greenville Drive.
On December 4, 2025, he was the key prospect acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates from Boston in return for starting pitcher Johan Oviedo. P Jesus Travieso accompanied him to Pittsburgh, while P Tyler Samaniego and C Adonys Guzman headed to Boston alongside Oviedo.
His brother Johanfran Garcia, a catcher, was signed by the Red Sox in 2021 and is also considered a good prospect.
