Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Tyler Samaniego was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the15th round of the 2021 amateur draft out of the University of South Alabama. he played in the Pirates system from 2021 to 2025, reaching AA for the first time in 2022, and then playing at least part of each of the next three seasons at the level with the Altoona Curve of the Eastern League, but not moving further up. He was used exclusively as a reliever during that period, except for one start at Altoona in 2023 and another on a rehabilitation back in the Arizona Complex League in 2025. He missed large chunks of both 2024 and 2025 with an elbow injury, which required a brace to be surgically inserted to stabilize his ulnar collateral ligament, which explains in part why his progression up the minor league ladder stalled.
On December 4, 2025 he was traded by the Pirates to the Boston Red Sox as part of a five-player deal that saw OF Jhostynxon Garcia and P Jesus Travieso head to Pittsburgh on return for P Johan Oviedo, C Adonys Guzman and Tyler. He went to spring training with Boston in 2026 and while he did not make the team immediately, he impressed by giving up just 1 hit in 5 1/3 Grapefruit League innings. After making three relief appearances with the AAA Worcester Red Sox to start the season, he was called up to Boston on April 8th to replace the injured Justin Slaten. He jumped in his car and drove to Boston, making it in time for an early afternoon game at Fenway Park. It's a good thing he didn't dawdle (and that the WooSox were at home and not on the road) as he got to pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers, striking out three batters and walking one in a scoreless inning of work. That performance was part of a combined shutout featuring four pitchers in a 5-0 win over Milwaukee.
Both his father and grandfather played college football, but he says he got his love of baseball from his father, Rick, who passed away in 2022.
