In high school, Lorick played basketball, football and baseball. He set a school record with 32 wins, was second in history with 255 strikeouts and had a 2.05 ERA. Louisville Slugger named him as a second-team All-American. Going on to college, he was 2-1 with a save and a 4.13 ERA as a freshman. He was 0-1 with a 6.91 ERA that summer for the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League. His sophomore season, he fell to 3-3, 6.27. Back with Chatham in the summer, he improved there, going 1-2 with a 3.10 ERA and over a strikeout per inning. His junior year of college, he had a 2-1, 5.61 record. His hometown Atlanta Braves took him in the 20th round of the 2009 amateur draft.

In his pro debut with the Danville Braves, Jeffrey went 2-1 with three saves, a 4.09 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 33 innings. He began 2010 well with the Rome Braves (3-6, 4 Sv, 2.32) and Myrtle Beach Pelicans (two shutout innings). Atlanta then packaged him with fellow minor league relievers Tyrelle Harris and Robinson Lopez (who was right ahead of him in the 2010 Braves Media Guide) to the Chicago Cubs for Derrek Lee.
