The Havana Cubans played in the Florida International League from 1946 to 1953 and won the league title in each of their first five seasons. The team's star for several years was Connie Marrero. In 1947 he went 25-6 with a 1.66 ERA, leading the Florida International League in wins and ERA. The next year he was 20-11 with a league-best 1.67 ERA. He went 25-8 with a 1.53 ERA in 1949, leading the league in victories and finishing second in ERA. A year later he would make his big-league debut 4 days shy of his 39th birthday.

The 1950 edition boasted several future or former big-leaguers, such as Sandy Consuegra, Bobby Estalella, Carlos Pascual and Rene Monteagudo. Nap Reyes joined the club in 1951 as Estalella, Consuegra and Monteagudo left. Mike Fornieles, Camilo Pascual and Silvio Garcia joined the Cubans for the 1952 campaign. The Pascual brothers were the most recognizable names on the 1953 squad, which had the worst season at a still somewhat respectable 63-69.

In 1954 the International League expanded to Cuba with the Havana Sugar Kings and Havana left the Florida International League for higher pastures.
