Biographical Information[edit]

Gene Glynn was Minnesota's first ever "Mr. Basketball" in 1975. He was a high school All-American in both baseball and basketball that year before going on to play both sports at Minnesota State University, Mankato from 1975-1979.

Glynn played minor league baseball in the Montreal Expos system from 1979-1985. He played at the AAA level multiple seasons, but never received a call to The Show. Overall, he hit .230/.355/.298 while appearing in 525 games. Glynn spent his final season as a player/coach with the Indianapolis Indians and Utica Blue Sox.

After his playing career ended, Glynn spent the next three plus decades as a coach, manager, and scout. He began his journey in the Expos player development system. In 1986 and 1987, Glynn started each season as a coach for the West Palm Beach Expos before managing the Jamestown Expos once the New York-Penn League season got underway. In 1988 he coached the Rockford Expos and in 1989 the Jacksonville Expos.

Glynn joined the San Diego Padres organization in 1990 as a coach for the Waterloo Diamonds before becoming skipper of the Spokane Indians in the short-season Northwest League. He continued as manager of Spokane in 1991. Glynn switched to the Colorado Rockies in 1992 and managed the Bend Rockies. He received a promotion to Minor League Coordinator of Instruction in 1993. Glynn received his first taste of the major leagues in 1994 when the Rockies named him their first base coach. After the season, he managed the Maui Stingrays in the Hawaii Winter League. Glynn started the 1995 season as the Rockies Minor League Field Coordinator before taking over as their first base coach on June 27th. He moved over to the third base coaching box for the 1996-1998 seasons.

The Montreal Expos rehired Glynn in 1999 as their third base coach. The reunion only lasted one year before Glynn joined the Chicago Cubs in 2000 as their third base coach. He remained in this position until July 10, 2002 when the Cubs fired him, shortly after the Cubs fired manager Don Baylor. Glynn reprised his role as third base coach for the San Francisco Giants for the 2003 through 2006 seasons.

Glynn's career took another turn in 2007 when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays hired him as a professional scout. He remained in this position through 2011. After the latter season, Glynn served as the third base coach for the Bravos de Margarita in the Venezuelan League until November 28th. From 2006 through 2011, Glynn took on a second job as head coach of the boys basketball team at Waseca High School.

The Minnesota Twins hired Glynn in 2012 to manage their AAA affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings. He continued in this position through 2014. After the latter season, he returned to the Bravos de Margarita as their bench coach for the 2014/2015 season. The Twins then promoted Glynn to third base coach for the major league team in 2015 where he remained through 2018. Glynn's final baseball stop came with the Miami Marlins where he worked as their Minor League Infield & Baserunning Coordinator from 2019-2020.

Though retired from coaching baseball, Glynn did not quit coaching entirely. He coached the St. Clair High School Cyclones boys basketball team during the 2021/2022 season.
