Biographical Information[edit]

Fumitaka Ito played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 14 years

Ito was drafted by the Hanshin Tigers in the first round of the 1977 NPB draft, and he had a 7.65 ERA in 18 games in 1978. he was 1-3 with a 4.92 ERA in 1979, and he went 4-6 with a 3.83 ERA in 1980. As a regular starter, Ito went 8-8 with a 3.67 ERA in 1981 and 10-10 with a 3.28 ERA in 1982. He was 7th in losses in the Central League in the '82 season, tied with Takashi Nishimoto, Masaharu Tachino, Masaji Hiramatsu and Kenichi Kajima. Ito slumped to 6-7 with a 5.20 ERA in 1983, and he had a 4-11 record with a 4.84 ERA in 1984. He was 4th in losses this time, tied with Genji Kaku, Tsugio Kanazawa, Kajima and Hirofumi Sekine.

The Nagoya native was 5-5 with a 4.51 ERA in 1985, and he started in the 1985 Nippon Series Game 4. Ito completed 6 2/3 innings with a 2-run homer allowed to Steve Ontiveros, and he ended up with a no-decision. The Tigers beat the Seibu Lions in 6 games, and Ito won his only title. His ERA was 4.47 with a 8-8 record in 1986, and he went 0-9 with a 5.67 ERA in 1987. He had a solid 0.64 ERA in his first 6 games in 1987, but he had a collision with runner Toru Ikenoue on April 27, and he missed the rest of the season due to a foot injury. Ito was 3-8 with a 4.25 ERA in 1989 after returning, then he pitched 24 games with a 5.35 ERA in 1990. He only got one appearance in 1991, and he announced his retirement.

Overall, Ito was 54-81 with a 4.43 ERA, struck out 705 and pitched 1,292 1/3 innings in 14 seasons in NPB.
