Biographical Information

Pitcher Cody Sedlock was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the Compensation Round A of the 2016 amateur draft, with the 27th overall pick, out of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The pick was compensation for losing Wei-Yin Chen to free agency. He was the Orioles' top selection that year, as they had lost their first round pick when they had signed Yovani Gallardo. He was the Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Year as a junior in 2016 and a Baseball America All-American. He had an unusual major for a college athlete, studying plant biotechnology.

He started his professional career in 2016 with the Aberdeen Iron Birds of the New York-Penn League, going 0-1, 3.00 in 9 starts but just 27 innings, as the Orioles deliberately limited the length of his outings. In 2017, he made 20 starts for the Frederick Keys of the Carolina League going 4-5, 5.90. In 90 innings, he gave up 119 hits and 36 walks while striking out 69 opponents. In 2018, he was limited to 13 games by an injury, including 7 on rehabilitation assignments with the GCL Orioles and with Aberdeen. With Frederick, he continued to struggle, as he went 0-2, 7.97 in 6 starts, allowing 19 runs on 27 hits in 20 1/3 innings.

He made his major league debut with the Orioles on May 29, 2022, coming in in relief of Bruce Zimmermann in the 5th inning of a game against the Boston Red Sox, with Baltimore already down, 6-0. He gave up a further 5 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings of work, although he did manage to keep the ball in the yard (Zimmermann had given up five long balls in his four innings of work) and the Orioles lost the game, 12-2.
