Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Carter Loewen was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 40th round of the 2016 amateur draft but declined to sign in order to go to college. He had already pitched for the Canadian junior national team by that point. He was at the University of Hawai'i for three seasons, having been redshirted in 2016, but the final one of these was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic after he had pitched just 7 1/3 innings. The 2020 amateur draft was then shortened to just five rounds, and he was one of a large number of amateur players who would normally have been drafted in later rounds who were left in limbo. In his case, he agreed to a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres for a minimal bonus.

He started his professional career when the minor leagues resumed play in 2021, going 1-1, 4.84 with 7 saves in 21 games for the Fort Wayne Wizards. In 2022, he was beset by injuries and limited to just 4 games. In 2023, he went 6-2, 2.20 in 34 games between the Class A Lake Elsinore Storm and High-A Fort Wayne and was named a Padres organizational All-Star after the season. In 2024, he spent the entire year in AA with the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League, going 1-2, 5.12 in 38 games. In 2025, he started off in San Antonio but was promoted to the AAA El Paso Chihuahuas on June 10th, but his season was cut short by an injury shortly thereafter. He had no decisions in 20 games but posted an ERA of 2.16 in 25 innings, allowing just 10 hits and 8 walks while striking out 23.

He was named to Team Canada's roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

He is not related to P/OF Adam Loewen, who also hails from British Columbia.
