Biographical Information[edit]

Local boy Carter Jensen, who hails from Kansas City, MO, was the 3rd round selection of the Kansas City Royals in the 2021 amateur draft.

As a high school catcher, he was part of a risky demographic for a high pick, and struggled a bit in his first two full seasons in the minors, hitting .226 in 113 games in 2022 and .211 in 116 games in 2023 (he had played 19 games in the Arizona Complex League the year he was drafted). However the fact that he was getting copious playing time in A ball while still a teenager was an indication that the Royals were pleased with his overall play and valued his potential. He rewarded them with a first very good season in 2024 when he was back in Class A with the Quad Cities River Bandits to start the year, then was promoted to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals of the AA Texas League on July 19th. He finished that season with a combined slash line of .259/.359/.450 in 126 games, with 18 homers and 67 RBIs.

Carter was even better in 2025, starting the season at Northwest Arkansas and then earning a promotion to the AAA Omaha Storm Chasers on June 24th. In 111 games between the two teams, he hit .290/.377/.501 with 20 homers and 76 RBIs. The Royals announced that he was being promoted to the big league club for September 1st. At that point, he was considered the #2 prospect in the organization and had played in the 2025 Futures Game earlier that year. He made his debut on September 2nd, striking out as a pinch-hitter for DH Randal Grichuk in the 9th inning of a 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. He played 20 games that first month, batting .300 with 3 homers and 13 RBIs for an OPS+ of 159. That made Royals fans very excited and in 2026 he opened the season with the team and playing every day between DH and catcher. However, he started just 2 for 18 and on April 2nd he was benched, not due to his performance, but for sleeping through his alarm and not getting to the ballpark in time for an afternoon game at Kauffman Stadium. It's a good thing that veteran Salvador Pérez was ready to take the field behind the dish in his stead.
