Biographical Information[edit]

Carlos Teran has pitched in San Marino, Italy, Venezuela and the Japanese independent leagues. [1]

Teran debuted in the Italian Baseball League in 2014 with T&A San Marino, allowing 3 runs in 6 innings in the regular season but struck out 11. In the postseason, he was 2-0 with a 2.47 ERA but walked 20 in 25 1/3 IP. [2] He pitched well enough to impress someone in Italy as the dual-citizenship Venezuelan-Italian got picked for the Italian national team for the 2014 European Championship. He allowed one run in five innings, striking out six, though control remained an issue as he allowed four walks along with his four hits. He got four of his five innings in with a start against Great Britain before Nick Morreale took over with a 13-1 lead in the 5th; he did not get the decision as he did not work enough innings for the win. [3]

The right-hander got one start in the 2015 European Cup and was outpitched by Rob Cordemans of the Amsterdam Pirates; Teran allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and 3 runs (2 earned) in 5 2/3 IP while striking out three before Junior Oberto relieved him. [4] He had a poor regular season at 2-0, 6.14 in the IBL but had a 1.80 ERA in the postseason with 20 K in 15 IP. [5] In the 2015 Premier 12, he again suited up for Italy. He did very well in his two outings. Relieving Oberto in a 7-0 loss to Puerto Rico, he pitched a hitless frame (1 H, 1 BB) before Ludovico Coveri relieved. Then, he replaced Luis Lugo with a 4-0 deficit against Team Canada and worked the final three innings while facing the minimum, allowing only one hit while K'ing three. [6]

He signed with ASD Rimini for the 2016 season. He excelled in the 2016 European Champions Cup, with five hitless innings (1 BB, 8 K) in three relief outings in the first round. He saved Carlos Richetti's 5-3 win over the Buchbinder Legionäre Regensburg and had a three-inning save in Ricardo Hernandez's 4-2 victory over Italian rival Fortitudo Bologna. He tied Richetti and former AAA hurler Loek van Mil for third in the event in whiffs despite being a reliever and tied Tom de Blok for the most saves. In the finale, he relieved Roberto Corradini with a 4-3 deficit against Amsterdam, a man on third and one out. He allowed a RBI double to Kenny Berkenbosch for insurance but recovered to fan Rashid Gerard and Jesse Aussems. Rimini got one back in the bottom of the inning but fell short. [7]

Teran was 2-1 with a save and a 3.21 ERA for Rimini in 2016, striking out 35 in 28 innings. His 17 games pitched were third in the IBL, two behind leader Darwin Cubillan. In the semifinals, he allowed 3 runs (2 earned) in 5 2/3 IP, whiffing 7. In the 2016 Italian Series, he allowed only one run in 7 1/3 IP over two games as Rimini fell to Bologna. [8] In the 2016 European Championship, he struggled (5 H, BB, 3 R in 2 2/3 IP over 3 G); his 10.12 ERA was second-highest on ERA, with only Filippo Crepaldi being higher. Italy finished third, their lowest finish in over a decade. [9]

His performance in Italy won him his first action in the Venezuelan League of his birth. He did well, going 2-0 with a 3.05 ERA in 21 games for the Bravos de Margarita, allowing only 13 hits in 20 IP. He allowed one run in 1 1/3 IP in the postseason. [10] He was slated to pitch for Italy in the 2017 World Baseball Classic but an arm injury cost him his chance, and he was replaced by Crepaldi. [11]

Carlos allowed three unearned runs in four innings (1 H, 3 BB, 6 K) in the 2017 European Champions Cup and took the loss against his old San Marino club. [12] He had mixed results in the regular season: 6-3, 4 Sv, 40 K in 36 2/3 IP but a 4.67 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. He tied Diego Fabiani for the league lead in games pitched (18), tied for 4th in wins and tied Yuri Morellini and Hernandez for the most saves. [13] He was 0-1 with 3 saves and a 4.32 ERA in the semifinals and pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings in the 2017 Italian Series, saving Richetti's win over San Marino as Rimini pulled off a sweep. [14]

He saw limited action for Margarita in 2017-18 (3 H, UER in 2 1/3 IP).
