Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Cade Winquest was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 8th round of the 2022 amateur draft out of the University of Texas at Arlington. He had posted ERA's above 5.00 all four years he had been at the school, but had pitched much better in summer collegiate baseball, including a 2.79 ERA in the Cape Cod League in 2021.

He started his professional career in 2023 with the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League going 3-7, 4.87 as a swingman. He pitched better in the Midwest League in 2024, going 0-2, 3.10 in 9 games for the Peoria Chiefs, but his season was cut short by an injury. In 2025, he went 5-7, 3.99 between Peoria and the AA Springfield Cardinals. The Cardinals decided not to add him to their 40-man roster after the season, exposing him in the 2025 Rule V Draft. It was not a huge surprise that he was taken by a team, but it was surprising that that team was the New York Yankees, given it was the first time they had been active in the annual draft since 2011.

He faced an uphill battle with the Yankees in spring training in 2026, given that the big budget team had not had a Rule V draftee on its roster since 1973. He did not have a great spring, going 0-1, 7.20 in 9 games but still made the team. However, manager Aaron Boone was wary of using him in any tight situation and while he warmed up at least three times, he never got into a game in the first two weeks of the season. It was clear that he was not really helping the team, so the Yankees had him designated for assignment and then returned him to the Cardinals on April 13th.
