Bruce Meyer
Bruce S. Meyer
- Born ~ 1960
Biographical Information[edit]
Bruce Meyer was named interim executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association on February 18, 2026, one day after the sudden resignation of Tony Clark amid allegations of improprieties. His selection was the result of a unanimous vote of the MLBPA's executive committee.
Prior to his selection, Meyer had been serving as deputy executive director since 2022, after joining the union in 2018 as senior director of collective bargaining and legal affairs. Contrary to Clark, who was a former player, Meyer was a lawyer by trade, having served previously as a senior advisor to the NHL Players Association and as a partner at the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges. He was already the MLBPA's chief negotiator for the next round of Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations and it was announced that he would continue in the role. This was a rather important development, as most observers were expecting a very difficult round of negotiations following the expiration of the current CBA in December of 2026, with the possibility of a lock-out and of a lengthy shut down of Major League Baseball.
At the law firm, he worked on some baseball cases, including working with the players' union on a case involving the television rights of the Baltimore Orioles back in 1985, when he was still an intern. Sports law cases then became a regular side gig at the time, even if he was mainly a trial lawyer working on more traditional corporate law cases. Among the more important cases he worked on was one in which the courts struck down restrictions on free agency for NFL players in the early 1990s.
He grew up a fan of the New York Mets on Long Island. He then went to Boston University from 1983 to 1986 to pursue his law degree, after earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and lived "literally across the street from Fenway Park" and attended a lot of games there as a result.
