Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Brent Schoening played in the Minnesota Twins system from 1999 to 2005. Though he spent two full seasons at Triple-A, he never ascended to the majors.
He was initially taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 7th round of the 1996 amateur draft, a couple picks after pitcher Scott Mullen, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the Twins in the 5th round of the 1999 amateur draft, a couple picks ahead of infielder Ken Harvey.
He began his career with a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings for the Quad Cities River Bandits in 1999 and a 6-4 record and 3.04 mark in 14 starts between the GCL Twins and Fort Myers Miracle in 2000. After slipping to 7-15, 5.37 in 2001 and 3-3, 5.52 in 2002, he rebounded to go 12-6 with a 3.98 ERA in 26 starts for the New Britain Rock Cats in 2003. He joined the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings in 2004, going 4-8 with a 4.56 mark in 44 games (8 starts). He returned to the club in 2005, going 2-4 with a 6.05 ERA in 35 games (4 starts) to wrap up his career.
Overall, Schoening went 34-41 with a 4.52 ERA in 179 games (86 starts). In 601 innings, he allowed 611 hits and 225 walks (1.391 WHIP), while striking out 484 batters.
He died at 31 from leukemia.
