Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Brandon Sproat was drafted three times. The first time came in the 7th round of the 2019 amateur draft, when he was taken by the Texas Rangers out of high school. However, he decided to go to the University of Florida and was again drafted in the 2022 amateur draft, this time in the 3rd round by the New York Mets. He declined their offer, returned to the Gators for another season in 2023, when he went 8-3, 4.66 in 19 starts, and played in the 2023 College World Series. He was drafted a third time after that, by the Mets again, this time in the 2nd round of the 2023 amateur draft. That time was the right time, and he signed shortly thereafter. In all, he had spent four seasons at Florida, but the first one, in 2020, had been cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic after he had made just 4 relief appearances.
He started his professional career in 2024 by appearing with three different teams: the Brooklyn Cyclones of the South Atlantic League; the Binghamton Rumble Ponies of the Eastern League and the Syracuse Mets of the International League as he reached AAA in his first pro season. He also played in the 2024 Futures Game that year, and finished the year with a combined mark of 7-4, 3.40 in 24 games, with 131 strikeouts in 116 1/3 innings. After the season, he was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year and a post-season All-Star in the circuit. In 2025, he spent the season in AAA with Syracuse, going 8-6, 4.24 in 26 games (25 starts), with 113 strikeouts in 121 innings. On September 7th, he was called up to New York to make a start against the Cincinnati Reds. He was the third highly-heralded starting pitcher to be called up by the Mets in a matter of weeks, following Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong. While his numbers in the minors that season were not eye-popping, he had started the year slowly but had been one of the best pitchers in the minors since the start of July. He certainly looked good in his debut, as he held the Reds hitless through the first five innings, although he did walk four and allowed a run on a sacrifice fly. He then gave up a single to Noelvi Marte with one out in the 6th, Elly De La Cruz followed with an RBI double and Austin Hays with a single, and it was enough to pin a 3-2 loss on the youngster. He made three more starts before the end of the year, finishing with a record of 0-2, 4.79, with 17 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings.
On January 21, 2026, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers alongside fellow prospect Jett Williams in return for Ps Freddy Peralta and Tobias Myers. While both players acquired by Milwaukee were considered solid prospects, it still looked like a badly lopsided deal in favor of the Mets. He was rocked in his first start for the Brewers, which came in their third game of the season against the Chicago White Sox on March 29th: he gave up a 1st-inning grand slam to Colson Montgomery and solo homers to Munetaka Murakami and Everson Pereira in the 3rd. He left after three innings, trailing 7-2, but his teammates were able to mount a big comeback in the 8th inning to win the game and he ended up with a no-decision.
