2020 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament
The 2020 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament was scheduled, as the name implies, to be the last chance to win a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before the Olympics were delayed to COVID-19. It is now scheduled for June 16-June 20, in Taichung, Taiwan.
It will feature six teams: the second-place team from the 2019 Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier ( Netherlands, the 2nd and 3rd teams from the Americas Qualifier (still to be determined), the top two finishers from the 2019 Asian Championship not already qualified ( Chinese Taipei and People's Republic of China) and the 2019 Oceania Qualifier champion ( Australia). They will square off for the 6th and final Olympic slot.
The competition was re-scheduled to take place June 17-21, 2020 in Taiwan, then rescheduled to "to be determined". It was originally scheduled for April 1-5, but was postponed a first time due to concerns over the pandemic causing disruptions in a number of Asian countries at that time. The postponement was decided in order "to safeguard the health of players, personnel and spectators." With the pandemic extending throughout the world in the following weeks, it became clear that the Olympics themselves were in jeopardy, and that all events tied to them were also up in the air. In the end, the Olympics were delayed by a full year, like all the qualifying tournaments that had not yet been played up to that point.
