Biographical Information

Infielder Zack Gelof played for the Israeli national team at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, going 0 for 13 with a walk and seven whiffs; only Gio Urshela had more at-bats without a hit in that WBC. He still made the majors later that year, in July 2023, following Israel squad teammate Spencer Horwitz . He quickly established himself as a rare bright spot on a weak Oakland Athletics team and was named the American League Rookie of the Month in August after hitting .287 in 27 games, with 8 doubles, 7 homers and 15 RBIs. He finished his rookie season at .267 in 69 games, with 14 homers and 32 RBIs, for an OPS+ of 134.

After his strong rookie season, his 2024 and 2025 seasons were a disappointment. In 2024, the A's last year based in Oakland, CA, he appeared in 138 games as the regular second baseman, but hit just .211 with 17 homers and 49 RBIs, his OBP falling to a terrible .270. He also led the American League with 188 strikeouts and his OPS+ was just 82. In 2025, he had a couple of major injuries, first hamate surgery in spring training that made him miss the start of the year, and then a shoulder dislocation that ended his season on September 20th. He played his first major league game on July 4th, but hit just .080 in his first 8 games to be sent back to the AAA Las Vegas Aviators, only returning in late August. When the shoulder injury ended his season, he was batting .174 in 30 games. He did better in Las Vegas, batting .256 in 47 games, but overall, the year was a write-off.

He started the 2026 season with Las Vegas, where he hit .366 in 11 games, before being called back to the Athletics on April 10th. It took him a couple of weeks to re-integrate the regular line-up, but on May 25th, a 1-for-4 effort against the Seattle Mariners launched a hitting streak that lasted almost a month, until his next ofer on June 23rd. The 24-game hitting streak was the sixth-longest in franchise history and ended when San Francisco Giants 2B Matt Chapman accidentally stepped on his hand in the 2nd inning causing a laceration that forced him out of the game after just one plate appearance. He had hit .351 with 5 homers and 7 doubles in what was tied for the longest hitting streak in the majors in the past two seasons.

He is the brother of IF Jake Gelof. While Zack skipped the 2026 World Baseball Classic, his brother took over his former spot on the Israeli national team.
