He had immediate success in the pro ranks, posting a 1.00 ERA with 14 saves and 42 strikeouts in 27 innings for the Hillsboro Hops his first year, to earn Baseball America short-season All-Star honors and a Northwest League Mid-Season All-Star selection. In 2015, he posted a 1.33 ERA, won four games, earned 33 saves, finished 45 games, struck out 75 batters and allowed only 12 walks and 33 hits in 54 innings (a 0.833 WHIP) for the Kane County Cougars. He was a MiLB.com Organization All-Star and a Midwest League Post-Season All-Star. Despite beginning 2016 with a 5.23 ERA in eight games for the High-A Visalia Rawhide, he was promoted to the major leagues from the low minors after striking out 22 batters in 10 1/3 innings (a ratio of 19.2 per nine innings).
In his first appearance with the Diamondbacks on April 30, 2016, he faced one batter – Gerardo Parra of the Colorado Rockies – and induced an inning-ending double play. He pitched 21 times for Arizona, going 0-1, 6.75. He was strictly a LOOGY, as his total of 13 1/3 innings attest. There was plenty of traffic on the bases when he pitched, as he gave up 13 hits and as many walks. He also pitched 19 times for the AA Mobile BayBears, where he was 0-1. 3.20 with 4 saves and 30 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings. On November 23rd, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners alongside 2B Jean Segura and OF Mitch Haniger in return for P Taijuan Walker and SS Ketel Marte.
