Biographical Information[edit]

Yugo Umeno has pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball.

Umeno was drafted by the Yakult Swallows in the 3rd round of the 2016 NPB draft, and he pitched 2 games with a 6.75 ERA in 2017. He struggled again in 2018, and his ERA was 7.09 in 29 games with 10 holds. Umeno improved to a 3.72 ERA with 28 holds in 68 games in 2019, and he was 3rd in the Central League in appearances (tied with David Huff) and 4th in holds (between Edwin Escobar and Suguru Iwazaki). Umeno notched 12 holds with a 3.61 ERA in 42 games in 2020, and he pitched 29 games with a 2.49 ERA and 8 holds in 2021. He collected 16 holds with a 3.00 ERA in 41 relief outings in 2022, but he only pitched 5 games with the big club in 2023. The Chunichi Dragons then selected him in the 2023 NPB Active draft, and he had a 4.15 ERA in 18 games in 2024.

Umeno's repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 95.6 mph, a cutter, slider, curveball and a changeup. As of 2024, he was 15-11 with a 3.96 ERA, collected 76 holds and 4 saves in 234 appearances, struck out 216 and pitched 238 2/3 innings in 8 seasons in NPB. He is tied with Tomohiro Umetsu and Yuki Matsui for 82th in holds in NPB history.
