Tomohiro Umetsu pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 11 years.
Umetsu completed a perfect game against Takushoku University in 2002, and he won the Most Valuable Pitcher award of the Tohto University Baseball League Second Division that season. He was drafted by the Hiroshima Carp in the 6th round of the 2004 NPB draft, and he had a 2.53 ERA in 33 games in his first season. His ERA was 1.23 in 23 games in 2006, and he slumped to a 5.28 ERA in 47 games in 2007. Umetsu still collected 21 holds that season, and he was 5th in holds (between Atsushi Kizuka and Kiyoshi Toyoda).
The Yamagata native bounced back in 2008, and he notched 21 holds with a 2.62 ERA in 64 appearances. He was 8th in holds (10 behind Tomoyuki Kubota) and 7th in appearances (between Kenichi Matsuoka and Kyuji Fujikawa). He had a 1.82 ERA in 26 games in 2009, then he struggled in 2010 as his ERA was 5.80 in 46 games. Umetsu had a 2.70 ERA in 23 games in 2011, but he only pitched 28 games combined in the next three seasons. The Carp released him in 2014, and the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles signed him. Umetsu only pitched one game in 2015, and he announced his retirement.
Overall, Umetsu was 8-11 with a 3.76 ERA, collected 76 holds in 291 appearances, struck out 198 and pitched 278 innings in 11 seasons in NPB. As of 2024, he was 82th in holds, tied with Yuya Ando, Yuki Matsui and Yugo Umeno.
